Meeting with Mr. Vipin Kumar, Chairman, Airports Authority of India

AMCHAM members had an interaction with Mr. Vipin Kumar, Chairman, Airports Authority of India on January 21st at his office in New Delhi. Ms. Ranjana Khanna, Director General CEO, AMCHAM opened the discussion by highlighting the substantial contribution being made to the aviation sector by U.S. companies in India and how their global expertise would further benefit the growth of aviation in India significantly. U.S. companies have the global capabilities to address cyber security, which is extremely crucial since aviation and airport infrastructure are critically at risk to cyber threats. Mr. Salil Gupte, Immediate Past Chairman, AMCHAM and President, Boeing India and South Asia, spoke about the significance of safety and sustainability for all segments of the airports and the need for addressing costs to make air travel affordable. He also raised the concern regarding air space availability in India in the coming decade, with both manned and unmanned aircrafts to be present in the skies. Addressing members, Mr. Vipin Kumar, Chairman, Airports Authority of India spoke about the growth of the Airports Authority and various challenges that need to be addressed on priority, including, airspace design, cyber security, providing better services at cheaper prices to flyers and the long gestation periods for tender approval. He also highlighted the significance of Make in India as a focus area for the Government of India. Members discussed partnership possibilities for various technologies that U.S. companies could bring into India and also areas requiring government support – including, integration of airports under one command center, energy efficiency for cost optimization, Make in India initiatives, long term operation and maintenance contracts, AI skilling, technologies like BIM which can help address tender and project timelines, tendering challenges through the GEM portal, AI for enhancing security, opportunities in surveillance, radar, air traffic control and data centre networks, airport design, project management, modernization of existing airports and integrated delivery services. The Chairman was joined by a team of senior officers, including, Member, Air Navigation Services, Member, Finance and Member, Planning. Representatives from AMD, Autodesk, Carrier, Cisco, Collins Aerospace, Fortinet, Intel, Jacobs, Microsoft, Motorola Solutions, Smiths Detection, Trimble and Turner joined the meeting. Mr. Rajiv Anand, Senior Director, Ms. Geeta Poduval, Director and Mr. Pranav Mishra, Director from AMCHAM also attended the meeting.
