Meeting with Mr. Sunil Barthwal, Commerce Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India

AMCHAM interacted with Mr. Sunil Barthwal, Commerce Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, accompanied by Mr. Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India on January 15th in New Delhi. Ms. Ranjana Khanna, Director General CEO, AMCHAM was joined by Ms. Komple Sharma and Mr. Pranav Mishra. The dialogue focused on strengthening U.S.-India trade relations and addressing key policy matters affecting bilateral business economic partnership. AMCHAM thanked the Commerce Secretary for timely support to resolve the challenge of Import Management System timeline extension, which has been crucial for members. Discussions included strategic recommendations for evolving policy frameworks in view of the upcoming U.S. administration change. The meeting addressed concerns regarding proposed restrictions on semiconductor products empowering artificial intelligence and their potential impact on India’s digital growth ambitions. There was significant emphasis on the growing importance of global capability centers (GCCs), particularly their expanding role in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, which is instrumental in driving last-mile development and technological advancement. The meeting reinforced the robust U.S.-India economic partnership and explored pathways to enhance collaboration across technology, semiconductors, cyber security, and agriculture sectors, while promoting resilient supply chains and friend-shoring initiatives.
