100 Days of the Trump Administration: Way Forward for the U.S.-India Partnership

The 100th day of President Trump’s 2nd term concluded on April 30th. This period is considered a benchmark to measure the early success of a president. In his first 100 days, President Trump signed 143 executive orders, the most of any president in this period, 42 proclamations, 42 memorandums, the Laken Riley Act, a continuing appropriations act, and other pieces of legislation for Congress. On May 1st, AMCHAM organized a webinar with Mr. Richard Rossow, Senior Adviser and Chair on India and Emerging Asia Economics Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Mr. Perry Spiegel, Manager, Trade Practice, McLarty Associates that explored the overall impact of these first 100 days on U.S.-India relations and the way forward. Ms. Ranjana Khanna, Director General CEO, AMCHAM warmly welcomed speakers and participants. Mr. Salil Gupte, Chairman, AMCHAM and President, Boeing India & South Asia, in his opening remarks, spoke of the steady progress in U.S.-India relations in an uncertain geopolitical scenario.

Mr. Richard Rossow provided a refresher on President Trump’s first term, emphasized the security and defense side of the bilateral partnership and noted both India and the QUAD as priorities for the current administration. Mr. Perry Spiegel highlighted that of the 143 executive orders, 23 were trade related and provided an overview of the administration’s views on various trade matters. Members participated in an active Q&A segment that touched upon the bilateral trade agreement timelines, trade investigations, critical minerals, emerging technologies, the AI Diffusion Act, global regulations and standards for global capability centers (GCCs) and the India-U.S. Civil Nuclear Agreement, among other topics.
