AMCHAM’s Eastern Region organized a roundtable session on the application of AI in the education sector on December 6th at Sister Nivedita University in Kolkata. The keynote speaker, Mr. Larry Nelson, GM Education Asia, Microsoft Corporation Ltd. gave a presentation that showcased how OpenAI could be leveraged in higher education and demonstrated use-case scenarios for teachers, students and governance. The unprecedented impact of AI on education was discussed from the perspective of productivity for teachers, a personal tutor for students, administrative and governance effectiveness. It was also discussed how Azure AI could offer opportunities for secure environments. The session was attended by AMCHAM members, senior government officials from the Higher Education Department and Technical Education, Training & Skill Development Department of the Government of West Bengal, university officials, Vice Chancellors of private universities and owners of private school chains. This session was preceded by a closed-door meeting with Mr. Manish Jain, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of School Education, Government of West Bengal and the Microsoft team led by Mr. Larry Nelson. They discussed how Microsoft could help the department leverage the application of OpenAI for the education sector.
