Defense Committee Meeting

AMCHAM’s Defense Committee held a meeting on January 31st at the office of Boeing India. Ms. Shweta B. Rao, Director, National Security Council Secretariat, Government of India and RDML Michael Baker, Defense Attache, U.S. Embassy participated in the discussions on the initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET), how defense could be brought in to discuss processes and platforms where both the U.S. and Indian government are collaborating and then moving forward in the interest of industry. Ms. Ranjana Khanna, Director General CEO, AMCHAM welcomed members, introduced Ms. Rao and then requested Mr. Alain Garcia, Chairman – Defense Committee, AMCHAM and Vice President, Global Business Development – India, Boeing Defense to give an industry overview and understanding of iCET. Ms. Rao gave a brief overview of the Government of India’s stance on iCET launched by both governments. Collaboration of industry and academia was noted as a high priority for the Government of India and industry was encouraged to take up this mission. Suggestions on need for respective NSC offices to take charge to result in expedition plus better technology was proposed. It was reiterated that U.S. industry is not able to partner right from the concept stage unless they receive clearances which remain stagnate and hence lose out on opportunities. It was was deliberated that if industry is exploring opportunities with service customers on projects that they need capabilities for, but there is apprehension on, if choosing the iCET route might delay the clearances. U.S. industry presently works through the route of the Defense Attache office, State Department and then releasability check. NSCS offered to play the facilitator role to bring in relevant concerned stakeholders to push for issues and work on processes.

Hyderabad Chapter Executive Committee Meeting

AMCHAM’s Hyderabad Chapter Executive Committee held a meeting on January 24th at the EY office in Hyderabad. The committee looked at the programs being planned for January to March 2024, discussed a possible date and Chief Guest for Hyderabad Chapter Sports 2023 Prize Distribution event and deliberated on ways to increase chapter membership.

Supply Chain & Logistics Committee Meeting

The Supply Chain & Logistics Committee held a meeting on January 19th virtually under the leadership of Mr. Praveen Gosain, Chairman – Supply Chain & Logistics Committee, AMCHAM and Sr. Director – Supply Chain & Business Transformation, Corning Technologies India. The committee engaged in a thoughtful discussion concerning the purpose, vision, and mission, ultimately deciding to incorporate sustainability and supply chain security into the mission statement. The committee addressed the selection of a theme for the upcoming year. Members will receive a list of suggested themes for further consideration and finalization. The meeting also touched upon the planning of a proposed in-person signature event slated for Q2/Q3 in Delhi or Mumbai. Additionally, an on-site factory visit may be organized in conjunction with the event, and discussions were initiated regarding the potential release of a white paper during it. The outlined next steps involve finalizing the mission and themes, confirming the keynote speaker’s availability, detailed planning for the signature event, coordinating the on-site factory visit, and preparing for the release of the white paper.

Knowledge Sharing Session on Digital Supply Chain

AMCHAM’s Supply Chain & Logistics Committee organized a highly enlightening knowledge sharing session centered around the theme of digital supply chain on January 19th virtually with Mr. Sushant Rabra, Partner, KPMG, as the guest speaker. The session drew a diverse audience of industry professionals in the supply chain and logistics domain, representing a broad spectrum of sectors. The discussion provided valuable perspectives on the evolving landscape of digital transformation in supply chain management and emphasized the crucial role of a digitally enabled supply chain as a key enabler to realize the overarching vision. Mr. Rabra delved into the transformative impact of emerging technologies which are shaping new paradigms within the modern-day supply chain landscape. Key topics covered included understanding digital enablers, exploring the vital digital technologies propelling transformation, and the integration of Generative AI into the supply chain ecosystem. ESG emerged as a non-negotiable element, with the entire supply chain becoming integral to ESG strategy. The discussion also touched upon the significance of as-a-service platforms, presenting novel opportunities for effective supply chain management. Notably, the growing interdependence of digital and functional capabilities was highlighted, foreseeing an inversion of the skill pyramid within the function.

U.S. Country Seminar at Vibrant Gujarat: Exploring U.S.-India Collaboration: Bilateral Momentum & Sector Potential – 11 January 2024

The U.S. Country Seminar ‘Exploring U.S.-India Collaboration: Bilateral Momentum & Sector Potential’ organized by AMCHAM India, as part of Vibrant Gujarat 2024 took place on January 11th in Gandhinagar. Ms. Ranjana Khanna, Director General CEO welcomed participants and provided an overview of the session. Mr. Som Satsangi, Chairman, AMCHAM and SVP and MD, India, Hewlett Packard Enterprise gave opening remarks about the thriving business ecosystem in Gujarat. Mr. Rushikesh Patel, Minister of Health and Education, Government of Gujarat, in his inaugural address shared valuable insights into the education sector. Dr. Sanjeev Khagram, Dean & Director General, Thunderbird Global Management School, Arizona State University shared about the ‘Najafi 100 Million Learners Global Initiative’ including the signing of an MOU with the local government and the launch of the initiative in the Gujarati language. Mr. Naveen Aggarwal, Office Managing Partner – Delhi NCR, U.S. – India Corridor Leader, KPMG in India, as the knowledge partner, meticulously unravelled the dynamics of U.S.-India cooperation in a presentation ‘Exploring U.S.-India Collaboration: Bilateral Momentum & Sector Potential.’

Mr. Raj Kumar, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Gujarat, kicked off the session with a keynote address, delving into the state’s economic policies, strategic initiatives, and incentives designed to attract global investments. This was followed by a panel discussion aimed at strengthening economic ties between the United States and Gujarat, illuminating the state’s dynamic and promising investment landscape, with a special emphasis on the manufacturing sector which was moderated by Ms. Khushboo Kundalia, Partner, Indirect Taxes. The session explored India’s economic trajectory, capital influx, and technological interventions in AI, with panelists, Mr. Chandrakant Nayak, Chairman – Western Region, AMCHAM and CEO & Country President, Dow India, Mr. Anand Jha, MD – Government Relations, Blackstone, Mr. Yash Kansal, Deputy MD, APCO Worldwide, Mr. Rahul M. Rao, Distinguished Engineer, IBM India and Mr. Nilam Patel, MD – India Operations, S&P Global. The session delved into policy steps for GIFT City, factors to enhance MNC investments, sustaining India’s manufacturing momentum, global chip shortage insights, and the U.S.-India MoU on semiconductors. During the seminar, Mr. Anand Jha emphasized the need for a dedicated judicial bench in GIFT City to handle financial cases separately, akin to a fast-track bench, distinct from civil cases. Mr. Nilam Patel urged the government and corporates to focus on building an inclusive ecosystem with a favourable environment that promotes gender equality and women’s empowerment. Mr. Chandrakant Nayak highlighted the green wave in chemicals and the evolving bilateral partnership in the sector. The concluding moments featured all panellists sharing insights on why Vibrant Gujarat remains a top investment choice, and the session concluded with a concise summary, providing a comprehensive overview of India’s economic landscape, policy initiatives, and global collaborations.

National Executive Board Meeting

The third meeting of AMCHAM’s National Executive Board for 2023-2024 was held on January 11th in Gandhinagar in hybrid mode. Mr. Som Satsangi, Chairman, AMCHAM and SVP and MD, India, Hewlett Packard Enterprise chaired the meeting. Mr. Christopher Heusler, President, S&P Global Sustainable 1 gave a presentation on ‘Look Forward: India’s Moment: How the Country’s Government, Business Community and Civil Society Meet Expectations Now’ and interacted with board members. Mr. Som Satsangi gave a presentation on the ‘Power of AI.’ The meeting was followed the U.S. Country Seminar ‘Exploring U.S.-India Collaboration: Bilateral Momentum & Sector Potential’ organized by AMCHAM, as part of Vibrant Gujarat 2024.
