Meeting with Mr. Swapan Dasgupta, Hon’ble Minister–in–Charge, Department of Finance, Government of West Bengal
Members of AMCHAM’s Eastern Region met Mr. Swapan Dasgupta, Hon’ble Minister–in–Charge, Department of Finance, Government of West Bengal on July 14th in Kolkata for a constructive discussion on strengthening West Bengal’s business and investment ecosystem. The meeting underscored the importance of closer government-industry collaboration to enhance the state’s competitiveness and create a more conducive business environment. Discussions focused on key infrastructure priorities, including improving road and rail connectivity, expanding metro networks, strengthening port infrastructure, and enhancing domestic and international air connectivity through capacity expansion at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport.
AMCHAM welcomed the government’s decision to revive the Kolkata Stock Exchange, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening the state’s financial ecosystem and improving access to capital. The delegation also emphasized the need for a modern, investor-friendly industrial policy with streamlined approvals, stronger investment facilitation mechanisms, and incentives to attract greater private investment and foreign direct investment. The discussion also highlighted West Bengal’s potential to emerge as a hub for global capability centers (GCCs), semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and other advanced technology sectors. AMCHAM members proposed that the state consider introducing a dedicated AI policy to accelerate innovation, investment, and digital transformation.
Members appreciated the government’s ongoing efforts to overhaul the state’s industrial framework. It was noted that a Cabinet Sub-Committee, is working to finalize a comprehensive industrial policy, expected to be rolled out in August 2026, with a focus on industrial incentives, single-window clearances, land reforms, and ease of doing business. AMCHAM India reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the Government of West Bengal and offered its full support through policy advocacy, industry expertise, and engagement with U.S. companies to advance the state’s economic development agenda. The meeting concluded on a highly positive note, with both sides expressing confidence that sustained government-industry collaboration would help position West Bengal as a more competitive, innovation-driven, and globally attractive investment destination.
