AMCHAM members from the healthcare sector met with Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India on April 29th at his office in New Delhi. AMCHAM addressed the existing policy and regulatory framework pertaining to the MedTech and pharma sectors. Members made a presentation and submitted the recommendation that industry partners with the Government of India in helping design suitable policies to enable ‘Innovate in India’ which is true precursor to ‘Make in India.’ AMCHAM also discussed a single window clearance, regulatory harmonization – mandatory PMS, globally harmonized standards (avoiding vertical standards, QCO/CROs), redundant regulations (Legal Metrology Labelling Requirements, Drugs & Magic Remedies Act), how ‘Innovate in India’ should be contributing to local content and thereby public procurement, incremental innovation to be recognized as it is the norm in medical devices (value based procurement/differential pricing), the mechanism to enhance the uptake of innovative therapies/technologies in various government health schemes like CGHS, PMJAY, NHM, etc. Discussions also covered health technology assessment for MedTech, PPP policy, industry-academic linkages, clear guidelines for import and usage of refurbished/preowned medical equipment, among other topics.
