Roundtable Session on the Application of AI in Education Sector

AMCHAM’s Eastern Region organized a roundtable session on the application of AI in the education sector on December 6th at Sister Nivedita University in Kolkata. The keynote speaker, Mr. Larry Nelson, GM Education Asia, Microsoft Corporation Ltd. gave a presentation that showcased how OpenAI could be leveraged in higher education and demonstrated use-case scenarios for teachers, students and governance. The unprecedented impact of AI on education was discussed from the perspective of productivity for teachers, a personal tutor for students, administrative and governance effectiveness. It was also discussed how Azure AI could offer opportunities for secure environments. The session was attended by AMCHAM members, senior government officials from the Higher Education Department and Technical Education, Training & Skill Development Department of the Government of West Bengal, university officials, Vice Chancellors of private universities and owners of private school chains. This session was preceded by a closed-door meeting with Mr. Manish Jain, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of School Education, Government of West Bengal and the Microsoft team led by Mr. Larry Nelson. They discussed how Microsoft could help the department leverage the application of OpenAI for the education sector.

Western Region Executive Committee Meeting

AMCHAM’s Western Region Executive Committee convened virtually on December 6th under the leadership of Mr. Chandrakant Nayak, Chairman – Western Region, AMCHAM and CEO and Country President, Dow India. The primary focus of the meeting was to discuss and explore initiatives aimed at enhancing member engagement and involvement within the chamber. Several key initiatives were discussed during the meeting: 1. Quarterly Knowledge-Driven Events: The proposal to organize one event per quarter with a focus on knowledge-sharing and dialogue with regulators was a prominent discussion point. 2. Thought Leadership Papers: A suggestion was made to create and circulate thought leadership papers among members, providing a platform for diverse perspectives on relevant topics. 3. Forums with Government Representatives: Members recommended organizing forums featuring discussions with government departments and ministers. Considering the ongoing discussions on the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, a session on this topic, potentially with external expertise, was proposed. Two additional dedicated sessions were suggested, one on D&I and another on mutual funds, aiming to cater to specific interests within the industry. The meeting concluded with a consensus on the proposed initiatives. Further communication regarding detailed plans and action items will be shared with members in the coming days.

CDSCO Stakeholder Consultation Meeting

On December 6th, AMCHAM members participated in the CDSCO stakeholder consultation meeting, under the Chairmanship of Ms. Deepti Gaur Mukherjee, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health, and Family Welfare, Government of India to discuss issues concerning medical devices and invitro diagnostics regulation in the country and future pathway to have a conducive ecosystem for these sectors. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss with industry any further issues, suggestions, improvements or recommendations, while planning for the implementation mechanism of existing regulations. Legal metrology – seeking exemption from the labelling requirement and seeking amendment in the LM Rule (MRP, consumer care, no manufacturer origin address), conducting state regulators training program, QCO/CRO, harmonization of standards and horizontal standards instead of vertical/product specific standards, etc. were addressed during the meeting.

CSR Committee Meeting

AMCHAM’s CSR Committee held a hybrid meeting under the leadership of Mr. Harish Krishnan, Chairman – CSR Committee, AMCHAM and Managing Director & Chief Policy Officer, Cisco Systems (India) on December 5th at the Cisco office in Gurugram. Mr. Harish Krishnan set the tone for the interactive meeting highlighting the purpose of the committee as sharing best practices and trends, discussing top of mind challenges, and looking for ways to work together. Ms. Anu Sood, Development Assistance Specialist (Development Partnership Advisor), Development Partnerships & Innovations Office, USAID/India joined the meeting. The committee deliberated on climate and sustainability themes for the 8th CSR conference to be held in early 2024, best practices for unspent funds, guidance around 3 year projects, capacity building for non-profits, aspirational districts, localization challenges and ICT interventions for greater social impact, among other things. The meeting was attended by 30 members.

Energy Committee Meeting

AMCHAM’s Energy Committee held a meeting virtually on December 4th. Ms. Ranjana Khanna, Director General CEO, AMCHAM, welcomed members to the meeting. Mr. Anil Bhatia, Chairman – Energy Committee, AMCHAM and Vice President and Managing Director, Emerson India shared the vision of the committee and moderated discussions. Members discussed the future plan of work and areas requiring engagement with the Government of India.

Under AMCHAM’s Infrastructure and Smarts Cities Committee, the Data Centers Working Group held a meeting on December 4th virtually. Mr. Vivek Dahiya, Managing Director, Head – Data Center Advisory Team, Asia Pacific, Cushman & Wakefield and Lead of the Data Center Working Group, highlighted emerging opportunities for enhancing U.S.-India partnership in the data center industry. Members highlighted various challenges being faced by U.S. companies and also policy issues requiring urgent attention by the Government of India.
