Interaction with Dr. David Warner, Consular Chief, U.S. Consulate General Kolkata 30th September 2020

A welcome for Dr. David Warner, Consular Chief, U.S. Consulate Kolkata, was organized by AMCHAM’s Eastern Region on September 30th through Webex. Mr. Gulshan Sachdev, Chairman – Eastern Region, AMCHAM and Managing Director Quaker Chemical India, began the session with welcoming Dr. David Warner to Kolkata and members present. He gave a brief of what AMCHAM India does in the Eastern Region and invited Dr. David Warner to give his address. Dr. David Warner has a PhD in Organization Systems from Fielding Graduate University. He is a retired Naval Officer and served as an Assistant Naval Attache and Navy Program Officer at the Embassy in New Delhi. His current portfolio includes all Consular services in various countries and diverse capacities.

Dr. Warner gave a brief on the current visa situation and mentioned that visas are currently being processed only for those who already had them earlier via the interview waiver program. There are no physical presence issue of visas, unless it is an emergency and the emergency has to be mentioned to enable it to be considered. There was Q&A portion in which members asked Dr. Warner any questions on visas and his initial experience in Kolkata. The meeting concluded with thanks to Dr. Warner for spending a considerable amount of time in answering queries and AMCHAM wished him best for his tenure in the City of Joy.

U.S. India Travel & Tourism Working Group Interaction with the U.S. Consulate on Visa Services Updates – 30th September 2020

The AMCHAM U.S.-India Travel & Tourism Working Group held an interactive session on U.S. visa services updates on September 30th for AMCHAM members across India. As the country begins to emerge from the lockdown mandated because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this was a necessary session with the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Consulates about the visa services being offered for business travel. The session covered the latest visa updates and useful information for companies who need to plan travel to the United States. The speakers were Mr. Morgan Parker, Consul General, U.S. Embassy, who spoke about non-immigrant visa services and Mr. Rob Batchelder, Consular Chief, U.S. Consulate General Mumbai, who spoke to members about the immigrant visa services. The session was chaired by Ms. Sheema Vohra, Chairperson – U.S.-India Travel & Tourism Working Group, AMCHAM and Managing Director – India, Brand USA.

Karnataka Chapter Executive Committee Meeting 30th September 2020

AMCHAM’s Karnataka Chapter held an Executive Committee meeting over Webex on September 30th. The focus areas of the meeting included how the Karnataka Chapter could engage members, increase member base, engagement with the Government of Karnataka and U.S. Embassy. In addition, measures to expand AMCHAM’s awareness and engagement with potential member companies was discussed. There was a conversation on the best way forward with the Golf Tournament 2020.

On September 25th, AMCHAM’s Honorary National Executive Board Members from the U.S. Embassy, Ms. Aileen Nandi, Minister Counselor Commercial Affairs and Mr. Thomas Carnegie, Minister Counselor for Economics, Trade, and Information Technology, Acting, updated members on the current U.S.-India trade and economic relationship. They also shared updates on key U.S.-India dialogues. They addressed questions raised and advised members on challenges and issues being faced on sectors ranging from manufacturing, logistics, medical devices, supply-chain, healthcare, etc.

U.S. Immigration Update: Navigating Through Challenging Times in partnership with Fragomen – 18 September 2020

A politically charged run up to the U.S. Presidential election has also added to looming uncertainty around U.S. immigration for the foreseeable future. As we draw close to the end of a tumultuous year, AMCHAM, in partnership with Fragomen, hosted a webcast featuring a panel of experts from Fragomen, including Fragomen founder and Chairman Mr. Austin T. Fragomen, Jr. The session covered the myriad of immigration and mobility challenges. Pandemic-induced travel restrictions, frequent changes in regulation and stricter enforcement have been a few factors that influence strategy and decision making. The speakers were Mr. Austin T. Fragomen, Chairman and Partner, Fragomen, Mr. Bo Cooper, Partner, Fragomen USA, Mr. Scott Fitzgerald, Partner, Fragomen USA and Mr. Saju James, Partner, Fragomen India. Mr. Ravi Krishnan, Vice Chairman – Karnataka Chapter, AMCHAM and Chief Administration Officer, Goldman Sachs, gave the opening remarks for the session. The session was a leadership focused session with top management from AMCHAM member companies.

Coffee with Edgard – A Motivational Talk with Mr. Edgard Kagan, Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy in conversation with Mr. Salil Gupte, Chairman, AMCHAM – 18 September 2020

On September 18th, AMCHAM hosted a motivational session with Mr. Edgard Kagan, Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy in conversation with Mr. Salil Gupte, Chairman, AMCHAM and President, Boeing India. DCM Kagan discussed wide-ranging topics that included his family, career path and India experiences both in Mumbai and Delhi. He also discussed leadership characteristics that have proved to be essential during these uncertain COVID times. He shared how the U.S. mission was engaging with Indian government stakeholders, the story behind the arrangement of the repatriation flights, logistics challenges and many other highlights. He discussed best practices that a leader should embody and demonstrate to have a happy and mentally sound staff in an organization. An overarching takeaway — the need to protect and encourage a team to perform to the best of their abilities would be vital for continued success.
