Meeting with Dr. Ajay Kumar, Secretary Defence Production, Department of Defence – 18th July 2018

AMCHAM’s Defense Committee met with Dr. Ajay Kumar, Secretary Defence Production, Department of Defence, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, at his office. Dr. Kumar briefed the group about his dialogue with his U.S. counterpart Ms. Ellen M. Lord, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment (A&S), U.S. Department of Defense, during the Defense Technology and Trade Initiative dialogue. He conveyed his pleasure at the alignment and positive movement of the dialogue and informed the team of the progress being made in the ISA. The group also discussed the inputs AMCHAM had provided on the draft offset guidelines that were released and the clauses on the DPP 2018 policy and also discussed offsets.

Briefing Session for Medical Devices Committee with U.S. Embassy Official – 18th July 2018

A small group of AMCHAM members from the Medical Devices Committee met with U.S. Embassy officials under the Chairmanship of Mr. Prabal Chakraborty, Chairman – Medical Devices Committee, AMCHAM and Vice President and Managing Director, Boston Scientific India. The purpose of the meeting was to brief the Embassy officials on key issues of the medical devices industry and seek their support for resolution of the same. AMCHAM also requested for a quarterly interaction between members and the Embassy officials.

Key topics of discussion included trade margin rationalization, pricing and regulatory challenges. Other members present included Mr. Vibhav Garg, Vice President, GE, Mr. Amit Kumar Singh, Director – Government Affairs, India Medtronic and Mr. Vivek Malhotra, Manager, Regulatory Affairs, Stryker. Officials from the Embassy included Ms. Aileen Nandi, Acting Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs, Mr. Gregory Taevs, Commercial Consul, Mr. Chad Norberg, Trade and Technology Unit Chief, Mr. Darrel Ching, Principal Commercial Officer, Dr. Vid Nukala, Senior Advisor, Biomedical Science & Technology and Health, Ms. Shilpi Jha, USPTO, Ms. Bhavna Vishwakarma, Sr. Commercial Specialist and Ms. Parul Dedeja, Commercial Specialist. From AMCHAM, Mr. Gaurav Mendiratta joined the meeting.

Tax and Tariff Committee Meeting 18th July 2018

The first meeting of AMCHAM’s Tax and Tariff Committee was held on 18th July 2018 in the EY office in Guguram. Ms. Garima Pande, Chairperson of the Committee and Partner – Tax & Regulatory, EY, in her welcome observations said that GST will continue to be a subject of discussion for this Committee along with new direct tax code and global tax reforms.

During the meeting, three presentations were made as follows: ‘Regulatory Updates – FEMA & SEZ’ by Mr. Rajiv Chugh, Partner & Regulatory Practice Leader – India, Ernst & Young LLP, ‘Impact of BEPS AP 5, 6 & 7 post signing of ML1’ by Mr. Prashant Khatore, Partner, EY and ‘Goods and Services Tax – AMCHAM Survey Findings & Latest GST Developments’ by Mr. Kunal Chaudhary, Partner, EY.

Mr. Sandeep Chaufla, Co-Chairman of the Committee, and Partner – Corporate & International Tax, PricewaterhouseCoopers Pvt. Ltd., in his closing remarks, said that the GST journey has been great, things were shaping up well although there was a long way to go.

18th July 2018On 18th July 2018, AMCHAM’s Supply Chain and Logistics Committee organised a Learning & Sharing (L&S) Session on ‘Authorized Economic Operator’ followed by a committee meeting. The meeting commenced with opening remarks by Ms. Surabhi Wahal Regional Director – Western Region, AMCHAM, followed by welcome remarks by Mr. Kumar Kandaswami, Chairman – Supply Chain and Logistics Committee and Partner, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Pvt. Ltd.

As part of the committee’s L&S initiative a presentation on ‘Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) – A Tool For Efficiency In International Trade’ was made by Mr. Prashant Deshpande, Partner, Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP and Mr. Himanshu Tewari, Partner, Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP. The presentation highlights included benefits and features of the AEO program, stakeholders interests and AEO – readiness assessment framework. The presentation was followed by an active discussion by members on the SCL survey, visit to the Dow India Technology Centre and ideation on forthcoming events. The meeting concluded with closing remarks by Mr. Kandaswami.

Western Region Committee Meeting 12th July 2018

The 2nd meeting of AMCHAM’s Western Region Committee (WRC) 2018-2019 was held on Thursday, 12th July 2018. The meeting commenced with opening remarks by Ms. Surabhi Wahal, Regional Director – Western Region, AMCHAM India and welcome addresses by Mr. Mahesh Krishnamurti, Chairman – Western Region, AMCHAM and Managing Director, RGP India. Ms. Kaku Nakhate, Vice Chairperson, AMCHAM and Country Head, Bank of America N.A. shared an insightful update of the successful annual door knock to Washington DC.

Committee members actively discussed agenda points including forthcoming initiatives. Some of the key points of discussions were the visits to Dow India Technology Center, CSR event on ‘Monitoring & Measuring Impact of CSR Programs,’ tour of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, a high profile roundtable meeting in Pune in partnership with the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai, and last but not least, AMCHAM’s Western Region signature event.

Defense Committee Meeting 12th July 2018

AMCHAM’s July Defense Committee meeting was held on 12th July 2018 in New Delhi. Guest speaker, Mr. Laxman Kumar Behera, Research Fellow at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), joined the meeting and discussed the MoD budget scenario at length with members. The committee also discussed the upcoming USG defense visits and status of USG defense policies.
